What should I be doing NOW to prepare?

1. Visit, visit, visit--Visit as many colleges as you can. Check out others on the Internet. Read their materials; know your subject.
2. Interview at colleges you like--Colleges like to know that you are interested in them. Visit, interview, and ask questions. Take your unofficial transcript sent in the mail with you. And don't forget to write a thank you letter!
3. Decide if you're going "early"--Remember, you go early IF you find a place that you absolutely love and IF this is financially ok with your parents. If you are going early, let your college counselor know during the summer.
4. Finish your resume--Although time-consuming, this is an easy task, best completed with parents who remember fondly all the great things you have done!
5. Practice those SATs or ACTs--A little daily practice goes a long way to raising scores!
6. Finalize your college list and know your application deadlines--By the end of the summer, you should have a shortlist of 8-10 colleges to which you are interested in applying.
7. Talk to your guidance counselor--Everyone (students and parents) needs to check in at least once with his/her guidance counselor.

Where can I find out about the safety of a college or university?

Campus Security Resource Office of Postsecondary Education United States Department of Education (www.ope.ed.gov/security/main.asp)

This resource will provide you with crime data for one or more college/university campuses. You can view the campus’ last three years of crime data, along with general information about the campus. This website will also allow you to compare several campuses against the national average or in relation to each other.

In light of the fact that your son or daughter may be living on a college/university campus for the next four years, security may be an important consideration when making the final decision on campus placement.
